Nina was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes which means the body’s immune system attacks and destroys the cells that manufacture insulin. This results in too little insulin to clear the sugar from the blood into the fat and muscle cells. Nina was able to decrease her insulin requirements through eating unrefined, low Glycaemic Index (GI) carbohydrates.

Low GI foods are digested and absorbed slowly but steadily and thus produce stable increases in blood glucose levels. This means that the body only needs a small, steady stream of insulin to control the increase in blood glucose levels.

The whole grain rolled oats gives Nina’s Muesli its low GI rating.

This means that the sugars derived from the carbohydrates in the muesli are released slowly and steadily into the bloodstream, thus maintaining a healthy blood glucose level, which also means that you feel full for much longer!
